A prototype weaponized UGV (Unmanned Ground Vehicle) of the U.S. military, the “MAARS” robot, has been modified by the Designated Defense School. The concept behind it is a “self-propelled heavy machine gun.” While its large-caliber machine gun offers powerful firepower capable of dealing significant damage to large Xis, its immense weight makes it impractical for Defense School students to carry freely. The “Caliber Carrier” was created to fulfill these students' wish of having a heavy machine gun that could move on its own. By adding a targeting sensor, it can be operated remotely for shooting missions.
In the future, the team is exploring autonomous combat through AI programming, as well as multi-platform capabilities for broader support roles. Mahori Kushi, a Designated Defense School student participating in the trial, affectionately nicknamed it “Chopper-kun,” as it would trot alongside her, making it look like it was going for a walk.
