[Features of the actual car]
The fifth generation Familia was introduced in 1980 with a change in drive system to front-wheel drive (FF). Mazda developed a new platform named the BD platform, and adopted the SS suspension, a modified parallel link strut system, for the rear. The newly-developed E-type engine, which won the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers (JSME) award, achieved both low fuel consumption and high power. The Familia, which combines fuel efficiency, driving performance, and space, won the first Japan Car of the Year award.
